Hands-On
How to start using the SDSS database and your plate to find objects.
What’s on my Plate?
Each hole on the plate represents an object in the sky and there are about 1000 holes per plate! Check out our Plates(link) Page for more information.
To find out about all the objects on your plate you can either access the SDSS database or use the DESI Legacy Survey Sky Browser. The first one gives you a list with information about every single object while the second method gives you a more visual output of the objects on your plate.
Finding Objects on your Plate
To find a specific object its x and y coordinates must be obtained from the SDSS database. You can learn more about how to choose a specific object on the Finding information about an object section below.
The first step to location objects on your plate is to create an axis that can be used as reference to locate each object.

Finding Information about an Object
To find information about an object in the SDSS database we will use two different websites.
As explained in the first section on this page, What’s on my Plate, the SDSS SAS website can also be used to find all the objects on your plate, their type and coordinates.
There are two additional methods that can be used, click on the button below to learn more about them.
