Hands-On
How to start using the SDSS database to find objects the objects on your plate.
What’s on my Plate?
Each hole on the plate represents an object in the sky and there are about 1000 holes per plate! Check out our Plates page for more information on how the plates are drilled and plugged.
Each plate is unique. To find out about all the objects on your plate you can either access the SDSS database or use the DESI Legacy Survey Sky Browser. The first one gives you a list with information about every single object while the second method gives you a more visual output of the objects on your plate.
Finding where an object is on your plate
To find the location on the plate of a specific astronomy target, its x and y coordinates must be obtained from the SDSS database.
Then, you need to draw a reference frame on your plate that can be used to locate each object.
